TOP NEWS STORIES:
UW System Eyes Permanent End to SAT/ACT Requirement
Leaders of the 13-campus system are considering permanently dropping ACT and SAT submission requirements for first-year applicants. UW officials argue that high school GPA has a stronger association with student outcomes than ACT scores, while course rigor and other contextual information also matter in admissions decisions.
Conservative Group Calls for Audit of BadgersVote Coalition
The Institute for Reforming Government is calling for an audit of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s BadgersVote Coalition after a report raised constitutional questions about the program. The report “Liberal Arts: How BadgersVote Coalition Uses Donor Cash to Import Democratic Votes” detailed how BadgersVote functions as a “partisan turnout machine.”

It is possible in the future that more courses at UW will follow suit in order to promote student engagement and improve the integrity of academic work.
TOP OPINION STORIES:
Are Wisconsin’s Public Schools Getting the Funding They Need?
When a school district must ask voters simply to preserve existing teachers, programs, and services, something is wrong with the system that funds it. That is increasingly the condition of public education in Wisconsin. Operational referenda were meant to let communities approve spending beyond ordinary needs, not to keep ordinary instruction intact.
UW-Madison Should Enroll More Wisconsin Students
The state’s responsibility is to ensure that Wisconsin students have meaningful access to a public university they help support. UW-Madison can remain a nationally and internationally respected institution while making a stronger commitment to enrolling Wisconsin residents.
UW System Should Restore SAT/ACT Requirement
A testing requirement can coexist with holistic review. UW–Madison should restore the ACT or SAT as one component of that process, with safeguards for access and a clear account of the evidence supporting its use.
