Culver's to Open Location on State Street
The popular fast food restaurant will be serving its world-famous custard, butter burgers, and cheese curds starting in January 2027
Culver’s will open a location on State Street in January 2027, adding to the already-thriving restaurant scene near campus. The Wisconsin-based fast food chain has multiple locations in Madison, but none within walking distance of UW-Madison. According to the announcement, “Culver’s believes that college students deserve easy access to our world-famous Butter Burgers ®, frozen custard, and fried cheese curds.”
The new franchise will replace the recently-closed Stop and Shop, and is expected to be one of the chain’s most profitable locations according to internal estimates.
Craig Culver said that the company hopes this will assist the chain in its new initiative to expand to California. Citing the large number of students from the state, he said that the company is betting on them returning home after graduation and taking their love of cheese curds with them.
Currently, most out-of-state students do not experience eating at a Culver’s during their time on campus. With the most accessible Culver’s to campus being near the West Towne Mall, most students simply do not make the effort to take the bus trip while they are here.
Culver also noted the importance of Culver’s as a state symbol “Frankly, the Culver’s brand is so associated with Wisconsin that it’s ridiculous it’s taken us this long to establish a branch so close to our flagship university.” Kwik Trip, another franchise heavily ingrained in the state’s identity, opened its campus location over a decade ago in 2014.
